ELIJAH

-1 Kings 17:1 – written over 3,000 years ago
                      – society was in a spiritual decline
                      – a line of 7 wicked kings had ruled for years – King Ahab was the worst
                      – the worship of Baal replaced the worship of the Lord
                      – a small remnant stayed faithful to the Lord
                      – the Lord raised up Elijah to change a nation
(1) ELIJAH WAS A COMMON MAN – 1 Kings 17:1
a. his name means My God is Yahweh
b. he was called Elijah the Tishbite – he was from a town named Tishbe in Galilee
-Elijah is called this 6 times – 6 is the number of man – James 5:17a
c. Tishbe was a city in the region known as Gilead – 1 Kings 17:1
Gilead – means raw or rugged
Elijah was just a rugged backwoods kind of man whose message and mannerisms were rugged just like him – 2 Kings 1:7-8
Elijah was who he was and did what he did because of the Lord
Elijah was available — it was the right time
***It is the right time for us to be available to be used by the Lord…
(2) ELIJAH WAS A COURAGEOUS MAN – 1 Kings 16:29-34 & 17:1
-Ahab was the current ruler and was married Jezebel. They brought Baal worship into Israel and Elijah stood against all by himself…
The definition of courage – strength to persevere through conflict and difficulty and danger. It is having spiritual backbone with humility…….
Elijah had Courage:
1. To stand his ground against evil invitations
2. To Face the issues of his day
3. To denounce false religions and doctrines
(3) ELIJAH WAS A CALLED OUT MAN – 2 Kings 2:9-12a, 15
a.) Elijah was called out to serve the lord
-he was willing to do whatever the Lord wanted him to do
-being called out isn’t always for a specific duty.  It is the call to be a SERVANT…
b. Elijah was called out of this world – 2 Kings 2:9-12a, 15
-this world is not our home.  We are just passing through…
-Elijah did not have a lot and had no real attachment to this world….
-Elijah served the lord for 24 years and then went to heaven without dieing
-this refers to the rapture of the church – 1 Thess 4:13-18
      ****Elijah will come back again – Rev 11:3-6
           Points About The Catching Away Of Elijah
                     1. Elijah missed death
                     2. Elijah knew he would be taken up to be with the Lord – 1 Kings 2:2-6, 7-10
Until it happens, stay busy and serve the Lord…
                     3. The rapture will happen when God says it will happen – 2 Kings 2:11
-they were just walking along together
                     4. People knew something had happened – 2 Kings 2:12-15
-even when Elijah was gone, things still happened.  Things will still happen during the tribulation period.  People will be saved and changed…
