Sermon Notes 6/23 – The Holy Spirit

THE HOLY SPIRIT

First Corinthians 12 & 14

1 Corinthians 12
ONE BODY
v12 – the body of Christ is compared to a human body
-as the human body has many members so does the body of Christ
-the head of the church is Jesus Christ – Col 1:15-18
ONE SPIRIT
-Eph 4:4-6
-one true, living Spirit who is a person and God
-2 Cor 11:3-4, 13-15 – there are false spirits
verse 13 – all believers are baptized into the church by the Holy Spirit
3 Main Baptisms in the Bible
                1. water baptism…into water…by another believer
                2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit – our spirit is overwhelmed by more of the Holy Spirit,,,,,,,by Jesus Christ – Matt 3:1-11
1 Corinthians 14
verse 1 – Pursue love – means to press forward…run after love…persist until embraced
-this is a hunting term where you do not stop until you capture your prey
-you pursue love because love is God – 1 John 4:7-8
-we need to baptized in the love of God
-Pursue love, the Lord, the gift giver and not the gifts – Rev 19:9-10
Desire earnestly and eagerly spiritual gifts
Desire – means to long for…have a warm feeling for — Psalm 84:2
Earnestly – means with zeal and intensely
verse 3 – 3 Reasons for the Spirituals
         1. To Edify – means to build up – this is a construction term
         2. To Exhort – means to strengthen and encourage
         3. To comfort  – it means to give hope
verse 4 – Tongues and Prophecy
     Tongues
-Praying in tongues edifies us
-we do not know what we are saying – v2
-the enemy does not what we are saying – 1 Cor 13:1 – when we speak our heavenly language
     Prophecy
-Prophecy edifies the entire church because it is spoken in our native tongue
verse 5 – I wish you all would speak in tongues
-the Lord desires that every person be saved and speak in tongues
-Paul spoke in tongues – 1 Cor 14:18
-Paul is our Biblical pattern to follow in several ways
-to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, you just must be saved
It is better to prophecy than to speak in tongues unless someone interprets the tongues……
***Private Tongues – this is speaking in tongues personally and daily when you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  This is a possession of the believer
***Public Tongues – this is speaking in tongues in a public setting & there must be an interpretation
verse 6 – UNDERSTANDING
-Paul speaks about understanding what is said in church
-there must be an interpretation when speaking in tongues publicly
-prophecy can be understood because it is in a persons own language
