Sermon Notes 8/18 – The Holy Spirit is a Person

                             THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON

Genesis 1:1 – God is Elohim…refers to the trinity

-John 14:16-17 & 16:13-14 – masculine personal pronouns used showing the Holy Spirit is a person

Characteristics revealing the Holy Spirit is a person

1. The Holy Spirit talks – Genesis 1:3,6,9,11,14,20,24,26,28-29

2. The Holy Spirit has a will – Romans 8:27

3. The Holy Spirit loves – Romans 15:30

Genesis 1:1-2 – What is the Holy Spirit doing in Genesis?

1. The Holy Spirit is creating – He is God

———Acts 5:1-7

2. The Holy Spirit is Hovering – 1 Chronicles 13:5-10

           —The word HOVER has 3 main meanings:

        (1.) TO MOVE

-is continually moving…nothing can stop Him from moving

-Do not resist the Holy Spirit

      HOW CAN THE HOLY SPIRIT BE RESISTED?

1. The Enemy will try to resist the Holy Spirit – 1 Thess 2:18

-places obstacles in front of believers to stop and hinder them

2. Sight can be an enemy – Romans 4:13-21

-The Holy Spirit is always moving no matter what we see or do not see

-stand on the promises of God and believe

3. We can resist the Holy Spirit by blaspheming the Holy Spirit – Matthew 12:31-32

-this is dieing in the state of rejecting Jesus Christ as one’s Savior

4. We can resist the Holy Spirit through a lack of spiritual education – 2 Tim 2:15…Psalm 119:15-16…Colossians 3:16

-study the Word of God every day

***Do not resist the Holy Spirit and quench the Holy Spirit – this means to put out the fire of the Spirit – 1 Thess 5:19

***While some people resist – the Holy Spirit is striving – Genesis 6:1-8

strive – means to plead His cause

-the Holy Spirit trying to break down the resistance of the unbelievers

2. THE WORD HOVER MEANS TO BE OVER – Jeremiah 23:23-24

-this refers to the fact the Holy Spirit is everywhere at all times

-Genesis 1:1-2 – without form and void – means to be empty…desolate…ruined

-There cannot be a miracle without a mess……

-Christianity includes messes

3. THE WORD HOVER MEANS TO SHAKE – Haggai 2:5-9

In Genesis 1:1-2, the earth was shaken

-everything will be shaken

***The shaking of the second coming – Mark 13:1-26

-this shaking has already started

-the entire earth will be shaken, but believers will not be shaken – 2 Thess 2:1-2

v2 – shaken – means to lose your balance…agitated…panic stricken…troubled

gathering together – means to assemble together a complete collection
