Sermon Notes 5/22 – Resting in Surrender

Resting In Surrender

Matthew 11:28–30

  1. In order to find true rest, we MUST surrender everything
  2. True Rest is Supernatural…. Meaning that it can only come from God Himself

Jesus Knows what we need

Psalm 23:
Sheep don’t always know what they need
Sheep do not lie down unless four conditions are met.
  • They will not lie down if they are afraid.
  • Because they are social animals, they will not lie down if there is friction among the sheep.
  • If flies or parasites trouble them, they will not lie down.
  • if sheep are anxious about food or hungry, they will not lie down.
Rest comes because the shepherd has dealt with fear, friction, flies, and famine.
“He leads me beside the [c]still waters” ( The only way we get to the still water is by being led )
How do we know to Follow Him?

John 10:27

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me
We need to practice hearing His voice so we can be led to the Still Waters

2. We need to RSVP to the Invitation

Jesus invites us to rest (Come to Me )

We need to make a decision to accept the invitation

a. Rest Was Modeled by God
b. Rest was commanded by God
c. Rest Is an Act of Faith/Trust

Rest is something that We Must enter in to

Who labor ( meaning the burden we place on ourself )
Heavy laden ( burden that others place on us)

“Learn from me”? Disciples of Jesus, need to make a decision to learn or follow after Jesus Example….

Jesus said ” Take my yoke upon you” forget the other yokes
He said be Yoked to me….
He is saying if you make me your obligation, everything else will be easy….
Why is the yoke of Jesus easy?
On the cross He carried the burden that we were meant to
Partner with Jesus
  • The “yoke” symbolizes partnership, surrender, and discipleship.
  • True rest comes not from relief of responsibility, but from walking in step with Jesus.
  • Jesus doesn’t give us less to do, He gives us the grace to do it with Him.

3. Strength is Found in Surrender

2 Corinthians 12:9

Pauls thorn was not removed but he got something better
grace, which is the power to endure, to overcome, to stand strong in the middle of the storm.
God is not looking for strong people. He’s looking for surrendered people.

We don’t grow strong by pretending to be self-sufficient. We grow strong by admitting our need for Him.

What Dependency Looks Like?

  • Daily surrender in prayer — “Lord, I need You today.”
  • Listening and obeying the Holy Spirit’s promptings.
  • Letting go of control and striving, and resting in His provision
Matthew 11:30; he promised us to give rest to our souls
This is a Gift …..
The Soul
  • Mind – Thoughts, reasoning, memory.
  • Will – Desires, decisions, choices.
  • Emotions – Feelings, passions, likes and dislikes.

4.  Rest is found in restoration

He Restores our Soul…… Both Matthew 11 and Psalm 23 have something in common

The definition of Restoration: the action of returning something to a former owner, place, or condition.

  • Its like a fresh Start, a reset…. Getting back in line with the Fathers purpose
  • Restoring us to the condition in what we were made for.
  • How will Jesus Restore us? By bringing us back to His mind, His Ways, His Plan…
