Sermon Notes 4/7 – The Holy Spirit Stops Things

THE HOLY SPIRIT STOPS THINGS

***Acts 14:19-28 – Paul had a green light from the Holy Spirit to GO
***Acts 16:5-12 – Paul had a red light from the Holy Spirit to STOP
——-Receive a GO and a NO from the Holy Spirit……….
How does the Holy Spirit Stop Us?
1.)  THE HOLY SPIRIT STOPS US THROUGH VISIONS – Acts 16:6-10 (v9)
-this vision stopped Paul from going to Asia
-Visions are produced by the Holy Spirit
-Visions glorify the Lord
-Visions are given to help fulfill the Great Commission
-Visions are for everyone who is a born again believer
-Visions confirm what the Lord has already told us
-Visions must go along with the Bible
2.) THE HOLY SPIRIT STOPS US THROUGH CONVICTION – JOHN 16:7-11
-He is a convincing Holy Spirit
                       Two Types Of Convincing
(1.) CONVICTION OF WHAT WE BELIEVE
Conviction – this is a firmly held belief you are convinced about
—it is based on Jesus Christ and the Word of God
—it is not a belief in us, humanity or the government
                       a. this conviction is an attitude – a determination & choice
                       b. this conviction is learned – studying the Bible
——- we do not have to be shaken –  2 Thess 2:1-2 – to be moved out of place
and troubles – means alarmed & anxious
                       c. this conviction must be spoken – Matthew 3:1-3
                                    (2.) CONVICTION OF SIN – JOHN 16:7-11
Conviction of sin is a legal term where a lawyer cross examines someone until they say they are guilty
***Conviction is a Work of the Holy Spirit
—this can be a personal conviction meant only for you
***Conviction is for Everyone – John 1:29
-unbelievers – convinces them of sin, deals with their sin nature & their need of a Savior who is Jesus Christ
***Conviction and The Tone of Voice
-the Holy Spirit never condemns and only convicts – Romans 8:1
Condemnation – from the enemy and flesh and only puts down & tells us we are no good.  It is a rough tone of voice.
Conviction – is from the Holy Spirit and produces hope and keeps us close to Jesus
4 POINTS TO REMEMBER ABOUT CONVICTION
1.) Conviction is proof we are saved
2.) Conviction and confession of our sin does not eliminate the consequences of our sin
3.) Conviction can be accepted or rejected
4.) Conviction can come from another believer through the Holy Spirit
2 Samuel 12:1-15 and Ephesians 4:11-12
            a. we need to have the right people in our lives – Prov 27:6, 17
-believers – 1 John 1:9 – after salvation, convinces us of acts of sin
