REVELATION
Chapter One
Verse 1 – Revelation is mostly about the future
to show – to reveal things about the last days – the Lord is in the revealing business
shortly – the Lord is doing a quick work…Events in the last days are happening at a quick pace
—always be alert and prepared – and be filled with the Spirit – Eph 5:18
Revelation means to take the lid off/to discover something
—it is the picture of a curtain being lifted
The Revelation of Jesus Christ – the book of Revelation is all about Jesus
Revelation came from God the Father, to the Son & and was given to John by an angel…
angel signified it – means to make known/announce/to point to/to show by a sign or wonder
-Revelation 5:11 – There are millions and millions of angels
verse 1 – John – means the Lord is gracious – the author of Revelation
John was a servant – diakonos – serving others and not worried about being served…EX: like a server at a restaurant
Doulos – they never need to be thanked – Luke 17:7-10
Verse 2 – We can believe everything John wrote – he was an eyewitness to the ministry of Jesus Christ. He gives a clear record – testimony & witness
Verse 3 – Revelation has a blessing for those who hear and practice the word
prophecy – are word from the Lord
Verse 4 – Most NT books include 3 items in the beginning verses of the books:
Author – John Written to – 7 churches in Asia Greeting – grace & peace
The 7 Spirits – Isaiah 11:2 – these are 7 characteristics of the Holy Spirit
The Spirit of the Lord – refers to the Holy Spirit resting on Jesus
The Spirit of wisdom – The Holy Spirit is God and total wisdom
The Spirit of Understanding – reveals why things have happened to us
The Spirit of Counsel – Holy Spirit advice
The Spirit of Might – Holy Spirit energy
The Spirit of knowledge – helps us to know the future, His plan, and purpose for us
The Spirit of the fear of the Lord – this is respect and reverence for the Lord
Verse 5 – Three Characteristics of Jesus
1. He is the FAITHFUL WITNESS – reliable/dependable/true
2. Firstborn from the dead – Jesus was the first person raised from the dead with a sinless, never-dying body
3. Ruler over kings – Jesus is the highest authority in the universe
Three things Jesus does for us – verses 5-6:
1. Jesus loves us – an unconditional love – He loves you NOW…
2. Jesus washed us from our sins – with His blood
3. Jesus has made us kings and priests – verse 6
-This is who we are in Christ
Our identity is only in Jesus Christ, and it is not by feelings or actions, but by grace……It is not DO…It is DONE…
-Let’s see ourselves as God sees us…
verse 7 – Behold – it means to get someones attention because something is about to happen
Jesus is coming – it will happen
-Jesus did not ascend to heaven to stay there…
-The second coming of Jesus is a promise – John 14:1-3
-With clouds – represents His glory – Matthew 24:29-30
-Every eye will see Jesus – because Jesus will light up the globe
