Sermon Notes 1/18 – 1 Peter 1

1 Peter

Chapter One

SANCTIFICATION

1 Peter 1:1-3
-Sanctification – means to be set apart for God’s purpose
We get the words holy and saints from this word
2 Points:
1. We are saved and sanctified to fulfill our assignment
2. Being sanctified (set apart) is the will of God – 1 Thess 4:3
3 Levels of Biblical Sanctification
1. POSITIONAL SANCTIFICATION (Past)
-This occurs immediately at salvation
EXAMPLE: Moses delivering Israel from Egypt
-We are set apart from sin – bondage
-We are set apart from satan – Pharaoh
-We are set apart from the world system – Egypt
2. PROGRESSIVE SANCTIFICATION (Present)
-becoming like Jesus
-all believers are becoming like Jesus
-Ephesians 4:32
3. PERFECTION (Future) – this is when we get to heaven
-1 Thessalonians 5:23 – we will be totally set apart in heaven
HOW DO WE RECEIVE SANCTIFICATION?
1. WE MUST BE BORN AGAIN – 1 Peter 1:2
a. by the blood of Jesus – once and for all, the sacrifice of Jesus happened
b. The Lord has made us elect, chosen, handpicked
c. Pilgrims…Foreigners…Aliens…Strangers
There are two meanings for the word STRANGERS:
1. It means to be called alongside people who do not know the Lord
-Dispersion – to be scattered everywhere
-rescue – is an action word
-INVADE THE CULTURE
3 Main Camps of Christians
1. Separatists – separate from the culture/join the Christian subculture
2. Conformists – they become like the world system
3. Transformists – enter into the culture to see it saved and changed
2. THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME – 2 Corinthians 5:20
-We are ambassadors to Earth from our home, which is heaven
