Sermon Notes 11/6 – Forgiveness

Forgiveness

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12b)

All of us need forgiveness –> All of us need to forgive.

1. The IOU — “And forgive us our debts”

Our sin creates a spiritual debt cannot be erased by a bank deposit. • Instead of prison it’s hell
• BUT GOD! Jesus paid it in full with His blood.
• “It is finished.” (John 19:30)
• We are free—free from condemnation (Romans 8:1) and free to live with God.

2. We Are Commanded to Forgive Others

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matt 6:12)
• Forgiveness is not optional—it’s commanded.
• “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave
you.” Eph 4:32
• “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.
Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13

Forgiveness is always the right answer—and for your good!

3. Forgiveness Myths

1. Forgiveness means pretending like nothing wrong happened.

2. Forgiveness removes all the pain.

3. Forgiveness causes amnesia.

4. Forgiveness means justice will not be served.

5. Forgiveness requires an apology.

6. Forgiveness always equals reconciliation. WRONG!

Many times, reconciliation IS something worth fighting for!

Matthew 5:23–24

4. Forgiveness Flows From Being Forgiven

When you realize how much God forgave you, it overflows.

Warnings from Jesus:
– Mark 11:25 “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so
that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”
– Matthew 6:14-15 “If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father
will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:23–35)
