1 Peter

verse 1 –

(1) PETER IS THE AUTHOR OF 1 PETER

 Peter – one of the 12 disciples

         – crucified upside down

*Peter’s name means stone – Petros – a piece or fragment of rock

*Jesus is our ROCK – petra – means a massive rock or a huge boulder

***Matthew 16:13-18

(2) PETER KNEW WHO HE WAS IN CHRIST

-Peter’s identity was not in a position or title – he was not insecure

-There is no title before Peter’s name – he was just a Christ follower

(3) PETER HAD A GIFT AND AN ASSIGNMENT – Apostle of Jesus Christ

-this was a part of his gift mix

-apostle – means to be sent off from someone else on a mission with credentials (the anointing and calling of God)

-Peter’s assignment – to go to the Jewish people and bring them the gospel

a. The Lord has an assignment for every believer

-when you don’t know what to do, start to do something

***Peter was an Apostle of Jesus Christ

-Jesus means Jehovah saves

-Christ means anointed One – we get Messiah from this name also referring to the fact that Jesus is coming back soon

-Jesus Christ emphasizes the humanity of Jesus

-Christ Jesus emphasizes the deity of Jesus Christ

WRITTEN TO: – All Christians – Jewish and Gentile – in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey)

-of the dispersion – means to be scattered everywhere

(1) The first name given to the Christians is PILGRIMS…

              TWO MEANINGS:

Meaning #1

-Pilgrims – means to be called alongside of people who do not know Jesus

        ***we are called to be among unbelievers to preach to them the gospel

        ***we are to rescue them from sin – rescue is an action word

THERE ARE 3 MAIN CAMPS OF CHRISTIANS IN THE WORLD TODAY:

     1. Separatists – they separate from society and the culture to become a Christian subculture.  The culture is toxic and should be avoided so we are not infected…

     2. Conformists – they conform to the world system & become like the world.  They live a carnal lifestyle.

     3. Transformists – they remain strong in the Lord while also invading the culture.

Meaning #2

-the word pilgrim means to be a temporary resident

-our home is in heaven

*We are ambassadors to our homeland which is heaven – 2 Corinthians 5:20

         -we are on earth to tell people about heaven and our homeland

-the values and standards of our homeland are different from earth’s standards.  People think we are strange – STRANGERS, PILGRIMS, ALIENS…

(2) The second name given to the Christians is ELECT…

ELECT & CHOSEN – means to pick out, select, and to choose

a. -the Lord has chosen everyone to be saved – 2 Peter 3:9

-He has chosen us.  We have not chosen Him

b. Foreknowledge – means to know beforehand

-the Lord created every human being with a free will

          TO BECOME A CHOSEN ONE – 3 THINGS MUST HAPPEN

1. The Work of The Holy Spirit

-sanctify – means to set apart

-the Holy Spirit sets us apart through His conviction – continually

-by the Holy Spirit – salvation has everything to do with the Trinity and not humanity

2. The Word of The Father

Obedience – listening to the voice of the Father to be saved.  He calls to us…

3. The Work of Jesus

-this is the blood of Jesus – which cleanses us and forgives us of all of our sins
