The Psalm Of The Cross

                1. Psalms were spiritual songs and hymns to be sung by Israel to the Lord
2.Psalms were written by Moses, David, Asaph, Solomon, The Sons of Korah and others
3.Psalms were also PROPHETIC and foretold the coming of Jesus Christ

    1. There were 100’s of detailed prophecies written about the Messiah

    2. Jeremiah 23:5 The Messiah would be from the lineage of David 600 BC

    3. Zechariah 11:13 The Messiah would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver 487 BC

    4. Psalm 16:10 Nor will you allow Your Holy One to see corruption/decay 1000 BC

    5. Psalm 22:16 The Messiah would have His hands and feet pierced 1000 BC

    6. Psalm 22:18 Lots would be cast to divide up Messiah’s clothing 1000 BC

    7. The odds that any one man would fulfill just 8 of these prophecies is 1 in ten octillion that is a number represented by a 1 followed by 28 0’s

    8. For years skeptics doubted the authenticity of biblical prophecy saying after the death burial and resurrection of Jesus in 33 AD Christians added to the Old Testament Scriptures such as Isaiah 53:5 “But He was wounded for our transgressions He was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement for our peace was upon him by His stripes we are healed” 700 BC

    9. The Dead Sea Scrolls were found in caves approximately 1 mile from the Dead Sea and were copied/written by a sect of the Jews called the Essenes

    10. The Isaiah Scroll was discovered in 1947

    11. The Isaiah Scroll was dated and originally copied anywhere from 350 to 100 BC

    12. Guess what this scroll said?  Exactly the same thing! “By His stripes we are healed”

    13. From eternity past the Lord God Almighty planned The Cross of Christ it was NO ACCIDENT

  1. 22:1-5 God is Holy

    1. My God my God why hast thou forsaken me

    2. 22:3 But You are Holy 1 John 1:5 And this is the message that we have heard from Him and announce to you God is light and in HIm there is no darkness at all

    3. Upon the Cross God the Father laid upon His Son Jesus the sins of the world

    4. In those moments the inevitable consequence of sin was applied to Jesus which is separation from God

    5. He was forsaken of God for a time so that you would not be forsaken for eternity

    6. The Death penalty under the Law of Moses was stoning yet David wrote Psalm 22 which give us a very accurate description of death by crucifixion years before Rome invented it

  1. 22:14-18 Death By Crucifixion

    1. 22:14a I am poured out like water: Like stoning the Cross was the Roman form of execution for those deserving the death penalty

    2. The primary cause of death for someone who was crucified was asphyxiation and congestive heart failure

    3. (asphyxiation) = comes from a greek word meaning without. While enduring the cross one would spend all of their strength pushing up with their legs to catch a breath.  As the heart slows down fluid backs up in the lungs causing death. Thus when the soldier pierced his heart with a spear blood and water poured out

    4. Zechariah 12:10 They will look on Him whom they have pierced

    5. 22:14b My bones are out of joint = As the body hung on the cross muscle and ligament would give way and bones would literally come out of joint

    6. 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd = complete dehydration the blood becomes thicker and blood pressure goes up as the heart beats faster to compensate

    7. 22:16 They pierced my hands and my feet = He was nailed to the cross

    8. 22:18 They divide my garments among them and for my clothing they cast lots.  As a part of the executioners pay they were able to keep the belongings of the condemned.  His coat was woven in one piece so instead of rip it into 4 pieces they cast lots for it

  1. 22:27-28 Jesus will return in Glory

    1. 22:28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s and He rules over the nations

    2. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 -18 For the Lord HImself will descend from heaven with a shout with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God

    3. During the millennial reign our prayers will be realized Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven

  1. 22:29 All will be resurrected to face judgment

    1. All Those who go down to the dust shall bow before Him

    2. Philippians 2 every knee will bow every tongue confess Jesus is Lord.  Doing this now is better than doing it later

  1. The Power of the Cross you must realize that power

    2. Matthew 27:51 The Veil of the temple was torn in two now we have access to God Jesus is the mediator

    3. Generational curses were broken

    4. Addictions were broken

    5. Strongholds were broken

    6. The power of sin and death were broken
