“The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament”

The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

(1) THE HOLY SPIRIT REST IN THE OLD TESTAMENT  – Numbers 11:26

-in the OT, the Holy Spirit only rested upon people

Ex:  King David…….Samson

-in the NT, the Holy Spirit dwells within people

-Romans 8:9-11……..1 Corinthians 6:19-20……….John 14:16-18

(2) THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ORGANIZED – Exodus 3:7-10

-God’s plans or your plans….

-He moves, but there is also a plan to His moving…

-He just does’t fly all over the place creating confusion…

-Planning is found throughout the scriptures

a. the building of the temple

b. the mission of Paul

***do not make excuses for God’s plan for you

***a strategy of the enemy is to get people to ignore the Holy Spirit and rely on themselves and their own power and might

-Mark 1:35 – Maybe our lives are too loud to hear the Lord….

(3) THE HOLY SPIRIT’S FAVORITE WORD – Lev 11:44-45

-Holy

-1 Peter 1:14-16

holiness – means to be pure…untainted by evil or sin

***this is called the doctrine of sanctification

-there are 3 parts to sanctification:

1. PAST – positional sanctification – Heb 13:12 & Eph 1:3

-we are completely set apart from sin at salvation

2. PRESENT – this is progressive sanctification

-this is the process of being set apart from the Lord

How does this separation occur?

          a. from the Lord – 1 Thess 5:23

-the Lord automatically removes things from our lives

         b. intimacy and spending time with jesus – Eph 5:26

-as we spend time with Jesus, He removes flesh issues from our lives

          c. 2 Cor 6:17 – by our own choices

-I have to make personal decisions about what to separate from

3. FUTURE – – this is going to heaven and being totally separated from sin and evil

(4) THE STANDARD OF HOLINESS – Hebrews 4:12

-this is the Word of God

-what Jesus says and what the Word of God says is our standard of holiness to walk in and follow

-we can all understand the Bible – 1 Cor 6:18…Col 3:9…Eph 4:28
