Matthew 6:9-13

“Lead us not into Temptation”
         4 Definitions of Temptation
1. It means the solicitation to do evil.  It is an attempt to get you to do something.
2. It means a test. It is the testing of a believers faith – to see if they will hold on to
3. It means to bring into something.  We get the word gate from temptation.  We do not want to enter into the gate of temptation
4. It means to be brought under the control of something
Temptation Statements
(1) everyone wil be tempted – Matthew 4:1 & Hebrews 4:15
a. Jesus was tempted and is our Example to follow
b. temptations will not stop until we get to heaven
c. the Lord has nothing to do with tempting us – James 1:13-15, 17
***There are 2 sources of Temptation
(1) the flesh – inside temptation
(2) the enemy – outside temptation
(1) THE FLESH – James 1:14-15
-this is the old way of life that just exists within us even after we are saved
-it speaks..talk back
(2) DEMONIC FORCES – John 13:1-2
-this is outside temptation because demons cant live within the believer
-Demons speak – Matthew 4:1-12
-these temptations can never be stopped
-these temptations increase as your hunger for the Lord increase
-but we can stand against all temptations in Jesus Christ
                        SEVERAL WAYS TO DEFEAT TEMPTATION
(1) REALIZE WE HAVE A PROMISE – 2 Corinthians 1:20 & 1 Corinthians 10:13
-do not listen to the lies of the enemy
-the enemy is defeated – Col 2:13-15
(2) SPEAK AND PRAY

(3) SPEAK AND PRAY – Mark 11:20-24 & Luke 22:45-46

     (1) SPEAK
a. we have to speak to that mountain of temptation and let it know it won’t defeat you
b. Speak the Word of God
     (2) PRAY
-do not mess around with any kind of temptation
-use the name of Jesus Christ – Isaiah 59:19
-we have authority in the name of Jesus Christ – James 4:7 & 1 Peter 5:8-9
(4) YOUR ASSOCIATIONS – Luke 22:54-60
-Peter sat down among them
-connection – unbelievers
-communion – believers
