Joseph – Part II

Abraham was the father of Isaac

Isaac was the father of Jacob

Jacob was renamed Israel and was the father of Joseph

Joseph is a type of Christ and in this passage of Scripture did not sin

The Favor of God

Genesis 39:3-4 “Now his master saw that the LORD WAS WITH HIM and how the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand. So Joseph found FAVOR in his sight and became his personal servant and all that he owned he put in his charge”

Joseph received God’s favor in Potiphar’s house

Joseph received God’s favor in Jail

We receive God’s favor when we learn God’s word and obey it

Favor is God’s presence in your life

39:5 The Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake This is not a story of Joseph’s success rather it is a story of God’s faithfulness to His promises

(Read 39:7-20)

Temptation

39:6-19 And it came about after these events that his master’s wife looked with desire at Joseph and she said, “Lie with me”

Matthew 4:1 The Lord Jesus was tempted

Temptation is persistent 39:10 “Day after Day”

39:11 None of the men of the house was inside

Temptation will intensify 39:12 “And she caught him by his garment”

39:9 how could I do such a wicked thing and SIN AGAINST GOD?

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is  faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it

“Sin against God” = Sin grieves the Holy Spirit

Dealing with sin

James 1:13-15  desire, deception, disobedience, death

Look down the road and see where sin will lead you

Deal with it by fleeing Genesis 39:15 Joseph fled

1st Corinthians 6:18 Flee sexual immorality

What does the bible define as sexual immorality

Unlike Abraham Isaac and Jacob Joseph did not sin

SIN IS A CHOICE!

Character is doing what is right as defined by God with the risk of personal loss

Short term sacrifice produces long term blessing

Brokenness

39:20-22 “So Joseph’s master took him and put him in jail, but the Lord was with Joseph and gave him FAVOR in the sight of the chief jailer. And the chief jailer committed to Joseph’s charge all the prisoners who were in the jail”

Life’s not fair

Fair is a terribly disappointing perspective to have in this life

The Lord will do something to get our attention

This could be a tragedy, could be sit on the shelf or go round the mountain again

When the Lord gets us alone through suffering heartbreak temptation disappointment sickness or by thwarted desires and we are totally speechless then He begins to teach us

The purpose of this kind of pain is to bring us to a place of open submissiveness before the Lord

Being broken involves a period of pain followed by a period of growth

Break you then remake you

When I was young in ministry I was black and white lacked compassion lacked understanding.  Now after 20 years of ministry 100’s of crisis tragedies and funerals later I have a different perspective on what you are going though

You can hear the pain in a blues singer’s voice it is what makes them a good blues singer

You can hear the broken spirit in a worship leader’s voice it is what make them a good worship leader

People that have been broken by the Lord can minister to people that have been broken by the world
