Abide 15

(1) THE THEME OF JOHN 15 IS ABIDING
-the word abide is used 53 times in all of Johns’ writings
-the word abide is used 10 times in John 15
-the word abide means to remain; to stand fast; to stay where you are and not wander off
     Believers need to have staying power which is produced by abiding…….
(2) WHO WE ARE ABIDING IN – JOHN 15:1
     a. We are abiding in Jesus Christ – v1 – I am the True Vine
***There are 7 I AM statements in the gospel of John
John 6:48…John 8:12…John 10:9…John 10:11…John 11:25…John 14:6…John 15:1
     b. I AM – refers to Jesus Christ being God
John 8:58 & Exodus 3:14
Jesus Christ is God
***I AM THE TRUE VINE
True – means that which is real and genuine
-relativism – every person does what is right in their own eyes…..Judges 17:6
Vine – is singular which means Jesus is the only True Vine – 2 Corinthians 11:3-4
          is the only One who can nourish, fill us and satisfy us…
(3.) WHAT IS ABIDING?
-It is spending time with Jesus on a daily basis
-it is fellowship time with Jesus
-relationship vs fellowship
             Relationship – is a one time event where a person is born again
                                  -u can be saved but still live in the flesh as a believer
             Fellowship this is spending time with Jesus and this is where we grow
                ABIDING STATEMENTS
      (1) ABIDING IS CONTINUAL – Leviticus 6:12-13
-this is the believers responsibility in their growth
-we must keep the fire burning
     Why?  -because we will experience an evil day – Eph 6:13
                -to set others on fire – Eph 5:18
fire jumps – from one fire and then starts another fire
     (2) ABIDING IS A CHOICE – John 15
-every believer has a choice to abide or not abide in Jesus
-this is a command from the Lord to the believer
-we receive blessings as we obey this command from the Lord
-we cannot blame anyone else for our lack of growth
     (3) ABIDING IS WALKING IN THE SPIRIT – Galatians 5:16-23
a. walk in the Spirit – is continual
b. this is the same principle as abiding
c. walking means we are going some place – heaven – don’t miss it for anyone or for anything
d. walking in the Spirit keeps the flesh under control
                     ***the spirit and flesh in us both talk
                     ***whichever part you feed, that’s what will dominate you
